Full grain leather is one of the few materials that gets better with age — if you take care of it. Here's everything you need to know.
New full grain leather feels stiff. That's normal. Use it every day for 2-3 weeks — it'll soften, mold to your pocket or bag, and start developing character.
Apply a small amount of neutral leather conditioner (Bickmore Bick 4, Fiebing's, or Saphir) with a soft cloth. Let it absorb for 15 minutes. Buff off excess with a clean cloth. Don't over-condition — leather can't absorb more than it needs, and excess sits on the surface and attracts dust.
Blot — don't rub — with a dry cloth. Let it air dry away from direct heat (never on a radiator or in the sun). Once dry, condition it. Dark spots from water usually fade over time as the leather adjusts.
Keep it in a cool, dry place. Don't wrap it in plastic — leather needs to breathe. A cotton dust bag is ideal. If storing for a long time, stuff wallets loosely with tissue to keep their shape.
Over 6-12 months, your wallet will darken and develop a soft sheen from handling. This is patina — it's what separates real leather from plastic. Every crease, scratch, and spot becomes part of the piece's story. Don't try to hide it. That's the whole point.
